We are a founding chapter of SUAA, which began in 1971. Since that time, we have been a very active participant in the statewide organization. In brief, we strive to support the organization by recruiting current and retired SIU employees to join us. The more members we have, the more members the state organization has, and therefore more clout with the state legislature. In addition, we strive to educate our constituents at SIU on developments with their pensions and with Illinois higher education in general. Finally, we look for ways to be in support of our university and its people. As an example of our commitment to the university, we make a yearly contribution to Financial Aid to help students achieve their goal of graduating from SIU.
SUAA provides the framework for a unified message dedicated to preserving and protecting a strong public pension system, healthcare benefits, higher education, and the general well-being of its membership.
SUAA advocates on behalf of all faculty and staff of public universities and community colleges — both retired and current employees — their spouses and survivors, who are participants and beneficiaries of the State Universities Retirement System.
